The Lord Is with Us for the Journey Ahead

It’s hard to believe it’s already 2019. Time flies! As we enter the new year, I don’t know how you feel about one more year behind us and a new year ahead of us. In times like this, we tend to look to the future wondering what it holds for us.

Some people may read the news headlines and get worried about what’s to come; some may fret about their anticipated health or financial issues; and there are those who can still sing, “Don’t worry. Be happy.”

I remember some seven years ago when Beth and I visited with Earnie and Ruth Hummer, consulting with them regarding my coming transition from pastoring a church in Houston to serving with COM. I anticipated the challenges ahead—new responsibilities, relocation for my whole family, and raising support.

The Hummers prayed for us. Then Earnie raised his eyes and looked at me, saying: “Daniel, you know, the best is still yet to come!” The best is still yet to come. That was a powerful moment I still remember today, especially since the words came from a respected leader in his 80s who had weathered his storms and witnessed God’s faithfulness.

Indeed, for us Christians, the best is still ahead of us because God has promised to be with us. We read the same news headlines, but we believe God is in control of history. We face similar challenges in life, but we simply refuse to be so wrapped up in our personal stuff that we forget we are part of God’s blessings to people around us.

“But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.  -Isaiah 40:31
